ACTING SCHOLARSHIP IN THEATRE PERFORMANCE - This scholarship is designed to acknowledge and reward exceptional Thespians who are committed to honing their acting skills. It is available to high school seniors who intend to major or minor in theatre or a related discipline, and it comes with a $1000 prize.
MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP - This scholarship is aimed at recognizing and rewarding extraordinary Thespians who have a deep love for musical theatre. It is open to high school seniors who plan to major or minor in theatre or a related discipline, and it includes a $1000 prize.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR TECHNICAL THEATRE: This scholarship is designed to honor and reward exceptional Thespians who are committed to the technical aspects of theatre. It is open to high school seniors who plan to major or minor in theatre or a related discipline, and it includes a $1000 prize.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEATRE EDUCATION: This scholarship is aimed at recognizing and rewarding extraordinary Thespians who are passionate about theatre education. It is available to high school seniors who plan to major or minor in theatre or a related discipline, and it comes with a $1000 prize.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR PLAYWRITING/DRAMATURGY: This scholarship is designed to acknowledge and reward exceptional Thespians who have a deep love for playwriting and dramaturgy. It is open to high school seniors who intend to major or minor in theatre or a related discipline, and it includes a $1000 prize.
SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD: This scholarship is aimed at recognizing and rewarding outstanding individuals within our community. It is available to all high school seniors, regardless of their intended major, and it comes with a $1000 prize.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicants must be Thespians.
- Applicants must be high school seniors.
- Applicants can only apply in one category.
- Each school can only nominate up to 3 applicants in the Performance, Musical Theatre, and Technical Theatre categories. Schools can nominate additional students if they are applying for the Theatre Education or Playwriting/Dramaturgy categories.
- Applicants must be members of a registered Thespian Troupe.
- Applicants must participate in the Virginia Thespian Festival.
EVALUATION PROCESS
The scholarship evaluation committee will consist of a carefully chosen group of qualified judges, typically including at least four members: one from education, one with a performance background, a representative from the Alumni Board, and one with a technical background.
Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Thespian Activities/Résumé: 25%
- Recommendations/Essay: 15%
- Audition for performers/samples of renderings and designs for technical theatre/lesson plan for theatre educators and Interview/presentation for dramaturgy/playwriting: 60%
Please be aware that all application materials will become the property of the Virginia Thespian Society. Also, the name and photo associated with your Google account will be recorded when you upload files and submit the form.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM SELECTED?
- Scholarships are sent directly to the financial aid director of the recipient's chosen college/university by the Educational Theatre Association.
- The Virginia State Thespian Director and EDTA headquarters will contact the winners in the spring. The scholarship funds will be payable to the selected college/university, not to individuals or organizations.
