The Jon Borowicz Memorial Scholarship, an annual contest held in tribute to the founder of the Vermont Philharmonic, offers a unique chance for a high school student to perform as a soloist with the orchestra and receive a $500 scholarship. This performance, which is part of the Philharmonic's winter concert, typically involves a single movement of a concerto or another significant piece. SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION GUIDELINES
- The applicant must be a high school student residing in Vermont or in a town near the Vermont border. The student should be involved in musical activities in Vermont or neighboring towns and must not be a previous winner of this competition.
- The applicant is required to audition at the Barre Opera House on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at a specified time.
- The applicant must prepare three pieces for the audition, with at least one being a movement of a concerto or an orchestral work suitable for a symphony orchestra performance. The applicant will be asked to perform at least two of these pieces, one chosen by the applicant and the other(s) by the judges. At least one piece should be performed from memory. If the applicant is auditioning with a prepared concerto, two of its movements can fulfill two of the three-piece requirement. The Music Director is available for consultation regarding audition selections.
- The applicant must provide an accompanist and three copies of the chosen pieces for the judges.
- To be eligible for the $500 scholarship, the winner must perform as a soloist with the Vermont Philharmonic at their winter concerts on February 21 & 22, 2026. The scholarship should be used to advance the winner's music education.
- The judges have the discretion to award the full scholarship, only the monetary portion without the performance privilege, or no award at all if they deem there is no sufficiently qualified candidate. The judges' decision is final. The Vermont Philharmonic also reserves the right to cancel the competition and not award the scholarship if there are not enough applicants to conduct a competitive audition.
